Hmm, that could be some way off yet! I must admit I was never a fan of the 3D maps though. It was very hard to guess where a unit could/couldn't be seen, especially where stairs were concerned.

There's a feature in ufo:ai (an open source tactical game "inspired" (blatantly ripping off?) X-com that has multilevel maps. It also has a 1st person view button, so that you can see things from the target character's point of view (or at least character you control).
I don't doubt that would be a long way off, but the first person view does let you get a better idea of visibility angles.
