(I was originally going to post this as a response to Gun Choice, but this seems more like a discussion of strategies, so....)
After spending a number of games trying out the different weapon mixes and approaches, I find I generally do something like the following: 20% snipers with Techno 20% Multiple grenades with Medium Armour 40% MK1s with Medium Armour 20% Power Sword with Techno
My reasoning goes something like this:
The grenadier goes on point, opens or makes doors, throws grenades ahead to camping points, and generally cackles gleefully like the Mad Bomber from "The Tick". This opens up lines of fire for the sniper & the guys with the MK1s, and leaves a charging line for the guy with the sword. It also means I don't have to worry about a guy juggling between guns & grenades.
The sword guy is generally a few steps behind the grenade guy, so if the grenade guy does go "boom!", he's not taking too much damage, but if there are any enemy survivors, he cuts them down. If they have a good weapon (MK1 or Sniper rifle) he takes it, and switches to one of the other rolls, unless one of the ranged guys is running low on ammo.
The MK1 guys come in behind that, or guard potential flanking approaches.
The sniper's role varies depending on the map, but is either covering escape routes (e.g. in Assassins, long halls on Last Man Standing) or plays roughly in the middle of the pack, where he can support the most other guys. His role is basically insurance to make sure I can finish the level.
Once I stopped considering lasers as an actual weapon, things started going much better. Arguably, it could just be because I'm playing better, but I honestly think that at the moment lasers just aren't worth contemplating, except--like it says on the info page--as a weapon of last resort.
I haven't really tried out any of the pistols, either.
Those sound like good general tactics. I've started using sniper rifles a lot as well, to get the long corridor shots in. I also use the SP30 pistol a lot as it does a bit of damage and is quite cheap.
