How do people think about this idea: one some missions, make it possible to hear the enemy unit if they move. Basically, a player will be alerted to an enemy unit's position if the enemy unit moves and is within (say) 2 squares of one of their units, even if there is a wall/door in the way.

Maybe this is going to help to those units that stand behind a door waiting for the enemy.
That's a very good point. However, a unit behind a door is a problem that the player needs to get round anyway. And if the unit behind the door jumps out, then that might give the other player an advantage if they prepare for it by having several units waiting.
Also, a clever player could try and trick their opponent by walking two units up to a door and only walking one away, making it seem like they both walked away (if you see what I mean).
It's quite a big change, so I was only going to apply it to one or two missions first, or even make it an option that can be selected when making the game request.

Interesting idea. Did anyone ever play Sabre Team? As well as weapon skill, strength etc, each character had their own level of Perception. It was used for opportunity fire - the higher your perception combined with the amount of action points remaining determined whether or not you successful gained an attempt of opportunity fire. It was not always a dead certainty like it is in Laser Squad.
As well as being used for opportunity fire, it also determined your chances of hearing an enemy unit. The higher your perception and the more action points you left unused (standing still) the more chance you had of hearing an enemy further away.
Opposed to that, units moving had the option of a stealth mode in which it cost more action points to move, (maybe double) but you had little or no chance of being heard while moving around.
I've now implemented this as an option that can be selected when starting a game. If anyone tries it out, let me know how it goes!

I have to say I quite like this new hearing feature; it adds a lot to the game. In one of my games, I know there's an enemy unit on the other side of a door, I'm just waiting for them to burst through it. The tension!

I'm starting to enjoy it a lot more too. It completely threw me at first, but one you get used to it, it's a good feature.
